THE ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM
Cannabinoids bind to cannabinoid receptors, which in the human body are connected to the endogenous cannabinoid system (EKS or ECS). EKS is a very important physiological system and is present in our body to regulate and maintain health. How It Works? The main task of the endocannabinoid system is homeostasis, i.e. the existence of a stable internal (cellular) environment in a dynamic, ever-changing external environment.
So balance is the responsibility of the endocannabinoid system, and if anything is out of balance, it must be restored. This system enables communication between cells, tissues and organs in our system, while also taking care of our health and immune system.
It regulates important bodily functions such as sleep, appetite, reproduction, fertility, forgetting, and protection and prevention from stress. This system acts as a kind of emergency call system – when the nervous system is overstimulated due to injury, stress, strong emotions or a disease state, too many nerve impulses begin to travel through the neurons and there is a danger that the cells will burn out, so in this case the system secretes cannabinoids , which calm the nervous system. When the nervous system is excited, the nerve cells release endocannabinoids and the nervous system calms down. This is how our body can function even in unfavorable circumstances. However, due to the diseases of modern times (poor diet, lack of exercise, introduction of poisons, drugs into the body, radiation, etc.), our endocannabinoid system is repeatedly exhausted or destroyed, because it is not able to produce enough endocannabinoids needed by the body.
The cannabinoids found in cannabis (phytocannabinoids) are very similar to the endocannabinoids produced by our body, which is why plant cannabinoids can also bind to receptors in the endocannabinoid system – the body perceives them as its own and therefore does not reject them, i.e. phytocannabinoids they activate processes in the body instead of endocannabinoids. The healing power of cannabis is therefore manifested in the regulation of a multitude of processes – simply, in self-healing. What’s more, some research confirms that hemp’s cannabinoids destroy bad, cancerous cells without destroying the immune system.
